A breakfast blast of awesome nutrition!

As I had reached the incredible age of 66, and was still breathing, I wanted to pay more attention to two lifestyle changes; nutrition and exercise. Let's face it. When you're carting around a body that is well over a half century old, you just gots to take care of it as best as you can!

So, here is a typical breakfast meal deal that I often enjoy:

109 grams of lean roast beef – great protein source!
1/2 tsp prepared horseradish – an immune system stimulant!
1 cup tomato juice – fruits and veggie blast!
½ cup whole milk – a bit of vitamin D!
84 grams baked potato wedges – complex carbs!
29 grams onion
50 grams carrot chunks – a great carotene source!

This great meal start to any day has it all, in my opinion! High caliber protein, complex carbs, fruits and it contains a good dose of healthy fiber! The real kicker is that this meal is almost all absorbed by the small intestine!

Coming in at only about 460 calories, this mix of natural foods will give most anyone a very strong start to their day with only minimal impact to their homeostatic center line!

While this meal doesn't look to be that much, I found it quite filling and just the right amount to get me going on a planned two mile hike that same morning!

Sonics Chicago dog and fries still a good deal!

Forsyth MO - Grabbing a fast food meal that won't kill a diet can be a bit tricky. But, at only 690 calories, the Chicago styled hotdog at Sonic's along with an order of French fries ain't all that bad! Over the years, I've found the quality of fare at this venue to be of the best of quality, and so I make it a conscious decision to forgo burger joints like McDonald's.

And, while McDonald's will set you back almost $7 for a Big Mac and medium fry, my Sonic fare came in at only $4.85! That's a major savings, in my book, at marginally better nutrition. My only gripe about the meal is the sodium content of the dog. At 2300 milligrams, it's way over the top!

Bavarian sauerkraut sucks!

From one sauerkraut lover to another - the Bavarian styled stuff is horrible! I've eaten and enjoyed this soured cabbage creation for many years. In its normal form, the stuff can be addictive. One way to ween yourself off the stuff would be to buy a can of this crap! This food gets a -10, and in my view, would be better used to serve pigs....

Pot roast, potatoes, carrots and lots of horseradish!

One afternoon, while sitting at a local watering hole, I was talking with a friend named Nita about the popular condiment called horseradish and how we both liked this spicy white stuff served on a slab of pot roast. That conversation got my salivary glands working and I made it a note to myself to stop at a local meat counter the next day to pick up a 2 pound roast! Allez cuisine baby!

OK. So fast forward a number of hours and I found myself armed with the following ingredients:

2 1/2 lb roast tr-tipped roast
2 carrots, peeled and quartered
1 onion, quartered
4 Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
1 pkg of McCormick pot roast seasoning with cooking bag

I prepped the veggies, seared the meat on each side for about four minutes, placed the bag into the cooker and threw everything on in. After sealing the bag with the supplied plastic tie, I elected to set the Rival cooker on a high setting (230ยบF) for about two hours and then reduced it to low for another four.

'As an aside, another good friend of mine (named Brandy) gave me some cooking tips that I found interesting. Apparently her culinary philosophy is to do as little as possible when preparing this dish. For instance, she doesn't bother searing the meat prior to placing it into the cooker. She also avoids the peeling exercise by rough cutting up some potatoes (skin on) and by using baby carrots. (I had no idea if she bothered with peeling an onion). Everything is simply dumped in along with a little water and a tiny prayer book. The cooker is then cranked to the max early in that morning and everyone goes out to frolic. Later that day, I think she counts on someone taking notice of 'that smoking thing' in the kitchen and voila the meal is ready! Just kidding as Brandy is a very smart woman.'

As  the clock on the kitchen wall ticked the minutes away, I successfully resisted the temptation to open the cooker lid to take a peek. And, let me tell you. That's hard to do! At any rate, by the afternoon around 4PM, the deed was done. I removed the roast and veggies to a small platter and took the picture you see above.

A casino and ferry boat route for Rockaway Beach?

Forsyth MO - Back in June of 2016 I wrote a short piece on a pie in the sky ferry boat system for Taneycomo Lake. In the post, I had the idea of a three stop route that would help to renovate the failing economic futures of town like Rockaway Beach and Forsyth. And, while I received zero comments on the merits of the post or of the idea, a new development has arisen!

Recently, Don Smith the newly elected Mayor of Rockaway Beach appeared on a news program vowing to get an amendment on next year's ballot to allow a riverboat casino to operate in the town. This effort would be very similar to another attempt launched in 2004 that ultimately failed. The difference this time is the sad economy and many people's desire to see renewed economic prosperity where none currently exists!

Should this amendment get on the ballot and should it pass, that ferry boat concept I wrote about earlier would make a great deal of sense!

Was a gambling initative recently approved in Rockaway Beach MO?

Forsyth MO. – A call from a friend of mine in the morning hours of September 22, 2016 informed me, in a matter of fact tone, that the city of Rockaway Beach had just approved  or was in the process of approval of a riverboat gambling ordinance! (I asked as to his source and he told me. Something I've chosen not to to divulge at the time of this post). As it always is with such rumors, the details were rather sketchy. I had personally thought that it would take a statewide referendum and public vote to get this approved and even then you'd have to have some gambling coop involved to finance the whole deal (please excuse the pun)!

I made a call to RB's City Hall in an effort to either support this rumor or to squelch it with hard facts. After some delay,I was told that someone would call me right back..... no one ever did.

So as of now, the rumor stands, as there seems to be at least a little smoke rising slowly above that sleepy river front town.....

'Spreading rumors is like spreading fresh manure. While something may grow from it, you still have to endure that unpleasant odor.'

Is this a Paleo styled meal?

Did our Paleolithic ancestors of over twelve thousand years ago enjoy a 500 calorie meal like this? Surprisingly, the answer is 'sort of.

The Paleolithic Period coincides almost exactly with the Pleistocene epoch of geologic time, which lasted from 2.6 million years ago to about 12,000 years ago. This epoch experienced important geographic and climatic changes that affected most human societies. The ice age was drawing to a close and the planet was getting warmer which resulted in increased migrations of these people across the continents.
Definitely the wrong dietary direction...

How these people lived is sketchy. Nearly all of our knowledge of Paleolithic human culture and their way of life comes from archaeology and ethnographic comparisons to modern hunter-gatherer cultures such as the Kung San who live similarly to their Paleolithic predecessors. The economy of a typical Paleolithic society was a hunter-gatherer economy. Humans hunted wild animals for meat and gathered food, firewood, and materials for their tools, clothes, or shelters.

Human population density was very low, around only one person per square mile. This was most likely due to low body fat, infanticide, women regularly engaging in intense endurance exercise, late weaning of infants and a nomadic lifestyle. Like contemporary hunter-gatherers, Paleolithic humans enjoyed an abundance of leisure time unparalleled in both Neolithic farming societies and modern industrial societies. At the end of the Paleolithic, specifically the Middle and or Upper Paleolithic, humans began to produce works of art such as cave paintings, rock art and jewelry and began to engage in religious behavior such as burial and ritual

Paleolithic hunting and gathering people ate varying proportions of vegetables (including tubers/roots), fruit, seeds (including nuts and wild grass seeds) and insects, meat, fish, and shellfish. However, there is little direct evidence of the relative proportions of plant and animal foods. Although the term "paleolithic diet", without references to a specific time frame or locale, is sometimes used with an implication that most humans shared a certain diet during the entire era, that is not entirely accurate. The Paleolithic was an extended period of time, during which multiple technological advances were made, many of which had impact on human dietary structure. For example, humans probably did not possess the control of fire until the Middle Paleolithic, or tools necessary to engage in extensive fishing.

On the other hand, both these technologies are generally agreed to have been widely available to humans by the end of the Paleolithic (consequently, allowing humans in some regions of the planet to rely heavily on fishing and hunting). What is generally agreed upon is that the average human of that time was; muscular and lean, suffered zero heart attacks or strokes, had no dental problems and died rather young only due to injury or predation by wild animals. Not a bad role model for modern man to try and follow.

And in other news...

China's first-ever space lab will die a fiery death in Earth's atmosphere toward the end of next year, Chinese officials recently disclosed.

The 9.4-ton Touchmidong-1 spacecraft is currently intact and orbiting Earth at an altitude of 230 miles (370 kilometers), according to Wu Ping, deputy director of China's Manned Space Engineering office. That's a bit lower than the International Space Station, which usually stays about 250 miles (400 km) above the planet's surface.

Touchmidong-1 will fall back to Earth in the second half of 2017, and its demise will likely only affect people it hits as surviving debris smash into the ground. Current computations place the area of impact somewhere in the vicinity of Forsyth Missouri where it is said that residents there are selling their homes and getting out as fast as they can!

Brooks Thurman visits Forsyth!

Brooks with relative Ken Johnson
I recently had the great pleasure to meet Brooks Thurman while she was visiting her relative Ken Johnson at John's Frosted Mug in Forsyth Missouri.

Brooks aka 'Princess B' is a native of Forsyth Missouri who graduated High School there in 1999. She go her start on a singing career very early, at the age of 15, preforming at the original Shadowrock Bar! By the time she was 16, Brooks was performing all over Branson at such well known venues as the Down Under! Today the Princess is modeling, singing and works as a celebrity hostess for the VIP magazine in Las Vegas Nevada! When she is not performing on stage, you can often find Brooks teaching folks how to use sniper rifles and machine guns. Now that's what I call a multifaceted woman!

You can find Brooks Thurman on Facebook. Please visit her page and say hi!

Constitutional carry measure passes in Missouri!

Jefferson City MO – Here's the deal: The Republican-led Legislature enacted a Constitutional carry law Wednesday, September 14 by a 24-6 Senate vote and a 112-41 vote in the House. Both exceeded the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto of Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

The legislation will allow most people to carry concealed guns without needing a permit. That means they won't have to go through the training currently required for permit holders. Missouri will join only 10 other states with what supporters describe as a "constitutional carry" right. Other rights such as 'stand your ground' and the Castle Doctrine' were also strengthened.

So, does that mean everyone can now walk around with a gun strapped to their hips in plain sight. No, Missourians already have that right, subject to local ordinances. And it's best to know exactly and to the letter what and where those restrictions may apply. For instance, many local stores reserve the right to ask a customer to leave their premises if they walk around with a gun in plain sight. The carrying of any weapon open or otherwise is prohibited in places like government buildings, banks and schools. Even standing on a street corner with a gun visible can cause you problems if someone else decides to call the police. So, it is perhaps best to be circumspect and conceal whenever you are out and about.

The most major impact of the law will be the elimination of the need to get training, pass a firing test and then having to make an application out at the cost of a hundred dollars or so. So, if you're an average Joe or Sally, you can go ahead and carry concealed effective as of this post. Understanding, of course, that if you choose to not train with the weapon, nor understand the nuances of civil and criminal charges you may become entangled with should you employ deadly forces, then be now forewarned. Even a shooting where you were clearly justified with witnesses may or may not exclude you from court proceedings. It's not unusual for the relatives of the crook you killed to sue you in civil court to the tune of thousands of dollars... You have been warned!

Meanwhile....  In a split decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit said that there “is no Second Amendment right for members of the general public to carry concealed firearms in public.”
The San Diego policy states that “simply fearing for one’s personal safety alone is not considered good cause” for the purposes of obtaining a license.

The majority opinion, written by Judge William A. Fletcher, made a distinction between concealed carry and open carry, and did not try to answer whether the Second Amendment protects “some ability to carry firearms in public, such as open carry.”

Thus, while some states were making progress in the area of gun rights. Behind the scenes, the increasingly left leaning court system appears to be systematically removing many of the supports of the 2nd Amendment...

Colorado massage and Nick Drake!

Saturday sun came early one morning
In a sky so clear and blue
Saturday sun came without warning
So no-one knew what to do
Saturday sun brought people and faces
That didn’t seem much in their day
But when I remembered those people and places
They were really too good in their way
In their way
In their way
Saturday sun won’t come and see me today
Think about stories with reason and rhyme
Circling through your brain
And think about people in their season and time
Returning again and again
And again
And again
But Saturday’s sun has turned to Sunday’s rain
So Sunday sat in the Saturday sun
and wept for a day gone by...

Remembering Nick Drake from the 60's and what he was, could have been and is now remembered by a small dedicated click of humanity.....

Madonna - Frozen!

Circa 2017: I've been consumed, for much of my life, with watching a rear view mirror of opportunities lost. Only to find, that had I bothered to slow down a bit, they do still lay around me.... Well, it's perhaps best to have embraced my time here...Not so long ago (1970), a silver ring was delivered to me in my mouth, something which I did freely accept from a true lycan... And then the world turned on and evolved for a very long time. Very much later, that same ring came back to me, broken. I have it this day.

FDA bans 'antibacterial' soaps!

Say goodbye to those "antibacterial" soaps. The Food and Drug Administration says they do little or nothing to make soap work any better and said the industry has failed to prove they're safe.
Companies will have a year to take the ingredients out of the products, the FDA said. They include triclosan and triclocarban. Soap manufacturers will have an extra year to negotiate over other, less commonly used ingredients such as benzalkonium chloride.

"Companies will no longer be able to market antibacterial washes with these ingredients because manufacturers did not demonstrate that the ingredients are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections," the FDA said in a statement.

"Some manufacturers have already started removing these ingredients from their products."
Triclosan used in 93 percent of liquid products labeled "antibacterial" or "antimicrobial" - at least 2,000 different products, according to the FDA.

"Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water."

In 2013 FDA gave soap makers a year to show that adding antibacterial chemicals did anything at all to help them kill germs. It made the rule final Friday.

Taneycomo Lake cleanup Sept 17!

While most everyone makes an effort to not pollute via litter, there seems there's always a few individuals who with don't get it, don't care or just don't have the mental capacity to understand. Here is southwest Missouri, I've always been very proud of how nice our roads and waterways look. But since there is some trash out there, groups like the Ozarks Water Watch (www.ozarkswaterwatch.org) are on hand and ready to perform their annual Taneycomo Lake cleanup scheduled for September 17 beginning at 9AM at three select sites. You can sign yourself or a group up by going to their website or you can reach them at 417-729-4100 for more information!

Taneycomo Terrace looking great!

Railings look great!
Forsyth MO - Work at the Taneycomo Terrace in Forsyth Missouri is an ongoing job for the maintenance staff that lasts pretty much all year round. The wooden railings along the entrance ways, while attractive, require periodic work in the form of replacement and repainting.

After the maintenance staff, consisting of Chris and Craig had expertly replaced some sections of railing near my condo that have become weather beaten, Board member Steve Libhart was on the scene, quite often, doing a very professional job of getting the planks and supports painted! Steve told me that he is the only one who is doing the repainting effort for all ten buildings! Awesome!

Back Alley's of Forsyth, a real page turner!

DanO, photographer extraordinaire, is back at it again! In this sequel to his best seller 'Back Alleys of Detroit', DanO has traveled to the soft and damp underbelly of his country to expose infrastructural decay! This time he's chosen the sleepy little town of Forsyth Missouri, where the signs of moral turpitude, lurk just beneath the surface of seemingly calm waters. We must warn you, however, that some of the photos contained in his latest effort have been banned by media outlets like MSNBC who generally will publish just about anything!
